That’s right folks! I may be crazy, but we are going to have another Summer of Socks! :) It will be a mix of some of the fun we had last year with a few new things thrown in to keep it interesting. If you were part of this last year, make sure you read through this post as many things have changed.

But before I tell you all about it I’d like to send out a H-U-G-E thank you to Risa! She was nice enough to answer my pathetic plea call for technical assistance. If it wasn’t for her, this literally would not be happening (there was no way in heck I was going to hand code 75 blogs into the sidebar again!), so if you decide to sign up, you should go give her a big Thank You too! Risa, you rock! And thanks again!! :)

So what the heck is The Summer of Socks?

The Summer of Socks is a three month knit/crochet along designed to help us celebrate the warm weather while preparing for the day when we’ll want all those cozy socks to keep our feet and those of our loved ones warm again. Socks make a great project for taking on vacation and for keeping us at our hobbies and learning new things in those warm months when you just don’t want a sweater or an afghan on your lap (but I didn’t have to tell you that right?!).

When is it?

We’ll start the along on June 21st (the summer solstice) and end on September 21st (the autumn equinox). During the course of the three month along, you can knit or crochet as many or as few socks as you like. No pattern requirements, no yarn requirements, do as much or as little as you want! The ways you participate are completely up to you! But there are some fun ways that you can make the most of your three months.

Who can play?

Anyone can play who loves making socks, whether you knit them or crochet them! The only other rule is that you *must* have a blog that you update regularly so we can share in what you’re making.

The contests

Yes there are contests involved for those who want to exercise their competitive spirit while they crank out new socks. :) Here’s a few of them:

Most socks contest – This year this contest will be divided into a crocheters division and a knitters division. For each pair of adult sized socks you knit or crochet, you will receive 1 point. Whoever has the most points on September 21st in each division will win a fabulous prize! In order for your socks to count this year, you must post a picture to the Summer of Socks 2007 Flickr group and e-mail me to let me know that your picture has been posted (you’ll probably want to put them on your own blog too. Just sayin’ ;) ).

Socks on vacation contest – Take your socks on vacation! No matter where you are going to go to relax this year- the back yard, the local pool, the mountains, the ocean or somewhere else- take a picture, include your sock and e-mail it to me to enter the contest! Our participants will vote to determine the best picture and the winner will also go away with a fabulous sock-y prize!

Weekly link contestNew this year! We all know there is a lot of cool stuff out on the ‘net, but we don’t possibly have enough time to see it all. Did you find something really neat that is sock related that you want to tell the world about? Send me your links and each week I’ll pick a lucky winner who’ll get something fun in the mail!

And finally…

Design contestNew this year! We found out last year that there are some very talented and creative people who like to make socks. I think we should encourage these people to share their talents with us all, so we’ll have a contest for sock design this year. Submit your new and original pattern to this contest and a selected panel of judges will choose the best design from those submitted. The designer will win a fabulous prize and we will all benefit by being the first to get our hot little hands on a new pattern made just for us! (Just a couple of rules: Your pattern should be made with a yarn that can be purchased from one of our official sponsors and should be for adult sized feet.)

Please note! Each of these contests must have at least 15 people signed up in order for the contest to run.

There will also be secret contests throughout the three months. I can’t give it all away or it wouldn’t be any fun, now can I? ;)

Now I bet you are wondering about the prizes since I haven’t been very specific. Well I can tell you that the following fabulous sponsors are returning from last year:

Mama E

who even made us our own colorway in her fabulous yarn last year!

Simply Socks Yarn Company

who has already offered a skein of Schaefer Anne and a pattern!

And we have one new sponsor so far this year:

(my wonderful LYS)

SOS 2007 Prize - Woolbearers

who have already sent me home with the above skein of their amazing hand-dyed sock yarn. Check out their online store to see all their great products.

I would still welcome sponsors and/or donations for prizes (there are a lot of contests this year!), so please contact me [Jessica (at) zarzuelaknitsandcrochets (dot) com] if you have something you’d like to offer. In addition, you can indicate your willingness to make a donation on the sign up form.

So are you ready to sign-up? Of course you are! Sign-ups are open now and will close on May 26, 2007. To sign up, head on over to the Summer of Socks 2007 blog and click the link under “Sign up now” in the right sidebar. Fill in your information and you are on your way! But before you go, if you plan to participate in the Most Socks contest, be sure to head on over to Flickr after you sign-up and register for the Flickr group. I’d encourage everyone to sign up for the Flickr group even if you aren’t participating in this contest. Sharing pictures and discussion is a big part of this along, and we’ll be doing a lot more of it over there this year.

So what are you waiting for?! Go sign up NOW! :)

Well, there’s no way I’d possibly come close to “most socks” but I can confidently state that I will at least be working on socks during the time period, so yes, sign me up.

Of course, I’ll be going on vacation during the month of May, so any socks-on-vacation photos will have to be taken before the contest begins (grin)

I’m in! There is no way I could even enter the Most Sock contest. I am turtle slow! I take lots of weekend mini-vacations, so I’ll have plenty of opportunities for photos of socks on vacation.

  19. Patti O'Brien says:

I am, sadly, blogless, so I cannot officially join, but I will be knitting along in spirit. Not that I actually NEED any motivation to cast on yet another pair of socks! I will enjoy viewing everyone blogs. PattiO

  20. OK, Jessica, you know I’ve got to ask… You better make a rule that the socks can’t be cast on before June 21, or you know fools like me will try to push the envelope.

Never mind that I already have two pair ALMOST done, they don’t count. So I better finish them and free up the needles.

hmm… now that I’ve cast aspersions on myself, I better make a rule (for me, at least!) to show the cast-on in the blog! LOL
