In my plot to make everyone a spinner…
Posted by Jessica in Berlin Muster, Etsy shop, Life in NJ, Socks, Spinning, Summer of Socks 2008There’s been another couple of days of work.
First, thanks to those of you who have checked out the shop offerings for the month and/or left kind complements. Much appreciated!
There was another fibery gathering at my place this Saturday. It went *so* fast I feel like I hardly had a second to talk to anyone! Of course, part of that might have been my slow pace as my back has decided that dyeing about 15 lbs. of fiber in only a few days might not be a great idea. *sigh* Anne was kind enough to work on me and that sure helped, but it’s definitely been a wake up call that there need to be some changes in my physical fitness. Oye.
Anyway, the best picture I got was of everyone fearing the cutting of the deserts (and let me tell you, there was some seriously amazing stuff brought this time around)!
Too funny. There was drum carding and spinning (and first spinning lessons!) and knitting and food and laughter and… well… you get the idea. If you want to see more, you *must* check out Chris and Deb’s blogs. They have some great pics!
I also went to a NJ Fiber Fanatics spin in on Sunday. No pics from that one either, but it was at the Howell Living History Farm and was quite a nice day. HWJF came along and we were quite happy to be out of Bergen County and out in the fresh air for a few hours.
In the meantime, I realized that I have not yet shown you my next SOS sock and the first one is nearly done!
The pattern is Berlin Muster. The yarn is koigu that’s been marinating in the stash for a while, waiting for just the right thing. I started these right around the same time as the Bad Ass Nanners, but the call of the nanner was too great to resist.
This is definitely, as the pattern warns, *not* a mindless knit. It’s a 16 row repeat that doesn’t seem to follow much of a logical progression, at least not that I can figure out. Despite that, I love them and I’m happy to be back at knitting them. If you decide to try it, I highly recommend ignoring the written directions and just following the chart. The English translation leaves a little bit to be desired and I found I struggled a lot less with the chart.
I should also mention, as I forgot to with the nanners, that I finally purchased a couple of the knitpicks options fixed circulars and I’m using one set for this sock. I like them for the most part, although I feel like this particular size could have a slightly better point. I didn’t have that problem with the pair I used on the nanners though. Ideally, if I could take the points on my addi lace, the needle finish and the cable from the knitpicks and put them together, I would have my perfect needle.
Ya gotta have dreams I guess.

there is always room for improvement in needles! i love my knitpicks ones…..for me the cable wins out over the pointiness issue….
Thanks for the invite! I had a great time. new sock is gorgeous! Hope your back feels better!
It was a lot of fun, Jessica–and I really needed that!
Jessica,
I saw an ad in a Knitting magazine (Knit Scene, perhaps) for needles in which you select pointyness. Of course I think they were just for straights.
Thank you for supplying the fiber addicts of the world with your glorious colorways!
Lovely new sock! I really like that pattern. Also, thanks for re-stocking the store for us! I bought some stuff yesterday. I hate to say this, but, you really must slow down if your back is hurting. Take care of yourself first!
I’m bummed I missed the fibery festivities at your house. I did have a fun & very busy day at my town’s Children’s Day parade, etc. The new sock is lovely. You can never go wrong with Koigu.
Don’t you just hate it when your body doesn’t comply with what your mind tells it to do…or worse you have to pop an Advil after the simplest task…aging…oy.
Nice sock. I have been tempted to get the options but I need a reason to “treat” myself. ~ksp
Take care of that back! We need you in one piece. You’re too young to be falling apart.
Looks like a great gathering.
Loving that sock!
What is csm??? That’s my anti-spam word today. Weird…
I did the Berlin Muster for the Sock Knitters Pentathlon, and I agree, the written directions is definitely “clear as mud”. I used the chart ang it was a lot easier, although I still had some problem as the translation to the chart was wrong originally. I believe it’s fixed now.
Take care of your back!!! And I can’t wait to see what else you dye up/spin up!!!
Hmmm. What is it about us spinners that makes us want to convert the world? I don’t know, but I do it too.
There is one particular fiber in your shop that, if it happens to come up to WOOL, will find its way home with me.
See, I’m trying to put off buying more fiber until I spin up some of the stash…but…if comes to WOOL, then it’s a sign. (Telling you which one, would be cheating, wouldn’t it?)
Oh what fun! Wish I were on the other coast…
I get an angry back when I dye alot, too. It’s because of my set-up, the table is a little low and I lean over to see what I’m doing and that = ouchy lower back. If I’m conscious of my posture and sit instead of leaning over it helps. You need an ergonomic makeover for your dye studio!
I had a great time. I definitely needed and I was happy to meet some people I had only known in blogland. Thanks again for the invite!
Take care of that back!
I had a great time too and was happy to meet some new friends!
What a great plot you came up with! Your fibers are beautiful (previous post) – best of luck with your new shop
It looks like it was a great time! Sorry I missed it!
We go to the Howell Living History Farm in the fall to do the corn maze. It’s fun
