One last contest!

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

With less than two weeks to go, I may be crazy, but how about one last contest? :) This is going to be very simple. Ready? Here goes!

Write a caption for this photo of one of our founding fathers here in the US:

Philly 7-21-07 (4)

Send your caption to the contest e-mail address with the subject Caption Contest and the following information:

Your name as it appears on the sidebar of this blog: ______________

Your blog URL: ________________

Your caption:_________________

Your entry must reach the inbox by Friday September 14th at 8pm EST. I will narrow down the entries to a top 10, which will then be voted on right here on the blog (just like the Socks on Vacation Contest).

What’s in it for you? Goodies of course!

The grand prize winner (the caption with the most votes) will choose one skein from these three skeins of Perchance to Knit 80/20 Merino/Cashmere sock yarn!

Merino-cash sock yarn - Perchance to Knit

In addition, the next 5 captions with the most votes will win a set of stitch markers from what is currently available (you can see them all here)! That’s a potential to be one of 6 winners with this contest.

So what are you waiting for? Be creative, have fun and may the best caption win!

Good luck everyone!! :)

Surprise! It’s a new contest!

Surprise contest alert!!

That’s right! It’s August (how did that happen?!) and time for a surprise contest. I told you I had some extra tricks up my sleeve. ;)

Here’s the deal. We’re about to have a little scavenger hunt. You’ll answer 10 questions and get your name in a drawing to win this fabulous prize:

Turquoise and Limes

Self Striping Red, Turquiose, & Golden Yellow 009

That would be 2 different 4 oz. skeins of hand-dyed 100% superwash wool yarn from Cynthia’s Skeins. Cynthia was generous enough to donate this prize especially for this contest in addition to the stitch markers she had already donated. Thank you Cynthia!

Simple enough. Yes? Anyone registered in the along can play. Here are the rules (you knew there had to be rules, right?! ;)):

Copy and paste the text below into an e-mail you’ll send to me at the contest e-mail address (we all know how to find that now, right?!) with the subject Scavenger Hunt. Under each number, paste in the link to the website that you would like to supply as your answer which should NOT be from your own blog. Fill out the “Name” and “blog url” portions and you’re ready to hit send! Get it to me by 10pm on August 15th and you’re in the running for the loot. Winner will be chosen at random and announced around August 17th.

Got it? Good! Below the dashed line is your contest entry form. Good luck everyone!

A small point of clarification

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Because it was asked in the comments I thought I would clarify this to you all in one post.

You may enter any contest you wish, whether you checked it off on the sign-up form or not. The only restriction is that you may only enter 1 category of the Most Socks Contest (either knit OR crochet). If you didn’t check off the Weekly Link Contest box, you may absolutely still send in an entry at any time (unless you have already won). Just remember to consult the contest rules (conveniently linked near the top of the sidebar) before you send in your e-mail!

The main purpose of the boxes on the sign-up form was to let me know if there was enough interest in a specific contest for it to run. It was not meant to be restrictive.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail and let me know. I’m happy to help! :)

Have a great weekend everyone and keep sockin’!! :)

Design Contest Rules

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Here are the rules for the Design Contest

1. Your design should be made for an average adult size.

2. The yarn your pattern calls for should be readily available for purchase by along participants through one of our sponsors.

3. The pattern should be written and submitted in Word or PDF format.

4. You should use standard abbreviations in your pattern as listed here.

5. Your design should be completely of your own making and not infringe on the copyright of others in any way whatsoever. Violation of this rule could have serious consequences.

6. E-mail your pattern as an attachment with the subject “Design Contest” to summerofsocks2007 [at] yahoo [dot] com and include the following information in the body of the e-mail:

  • Your name as it appears on the SOS2007 blog side bar
  • Your blog URL
  • A statement saying that you agree to the rules listed here, you have not infringed on the copyright of another to your knowledge and that you agree to have your pattern (should you win the contest) released to the participants of this along before it is available anywhere else.
  • Anything else you think the judges should know about your pattern.

7. The deadline for pattern submissions will be 10pm EST on September 1st, 2007.

8. One entry per person please!

Please remember! Submissions that do not follow the proper e-mail format or meet the requirements listed here will be rejected and you may not resubmit. No exceptions!

Some additional notes:

You may blog about your design process if you wish.

You will retain copyright on your pattern but you must agree to have your pattern released to the participants of this along BEFORE you release it on your own website or through any other avenue. If you cannot agree to this, please do not enter the contest.

Please make sure you have your pattern tested by someone you trust. We all make mistakes!

Added 6/21: The question was asked if you can use a stitch pattern from some other source (such as Barbara Walker) in your design. Here is my response -

It is my understanding (and while I am a librarian I am certainly *not* an expert on copyright law) that if you use a stitch pattern from someone else and “modify” it so that it is included in a garment, that usage would be not be an infringement of copyright. You have taken the original idea and changed it in some way because you have incorporated it into something else. Or in the case of some stitch patterns, you have also taken something knit flat and changed it to be knit in the round (in the case of a sock).

Some examples that immediately come to mind are these two knitty patterns. You’ll see in the descriptions that they site stitch patterns from other sources (one of them Barbara Walker in fact). I would encourage you to give a very complete citation with your pattern if you choose to use something like this in your design including information about the book, page number etc.

Most of all, have fun and be creative! :)

If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at Jessica [at] zarzuelaknitsandcrochets [dot] com. This post will be updated as necessary throughout the along.

You’ll probably want to dig around for something that not too many people have seen just yet or maybe just haven’t noticed. I hope that gives you some ideas as you being looking for interesting links to send in!
