Weekly Link Contest Winners #5 and 6

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Welcome to another edition of the Weekly Link Contest winner report! The competition was especially tough this time around. Since we couldn’t have a winner last week, many people decided to step up and sent in some really wonderful links, which was great. It made the job of narrowing it down so tough that I decided to award two prizes this week to make up for the last. Admittedly, this weeks winners were chosen with those of you who might be entering the Design Contest in mind. That deadline is fast approaching (where has the summer gone?!) and these links may help you put the finishing touches on your entries.

So without further ado, our first winner is:

Ina!!

Ina sent in a link to the Knitting Chart Maker by Jacquie. Here’s what she wrote about it:

This boon to impecunious designers and occasional charters replaces tedious pencil and graph paper and renders erasers obsolete. Stitches for purl-knit patterns, lace, or cables can be shown at their true height:width ratio, with rows numbered for flat or round knitting. Other helpful features include copy, mirror image, tink, frog, resize, and stitch tally. Charts may be saved and re-used. The interface is intuitive, easy to use, and compares well with expensive chart software or improvised spreadsheet charts.

This really is a wonderful tool that I can definitely see using in any future design projects I might dream up for myself. I will warn you all that you should have Java installed on your computer in order for this to work properly (this isn’t a problem for most computers/browsers, but worth noting). My home computer didn’t like the site at first, but once I got Java set up everything was fine.

And our second winner is:

Phoebe!!

Phoebe’s link is going to help us all take better pictures (scroll down to “Life in Germany”) of our projects by showing us how to make an inexpensive light box. Here’s what she wrote about her link:

I thought that I would pick as my link this week the show notes from a recent episode of knitters uncensored…within the notes are tips of how to photograph yarn, and your knitting from one of the hosts, Elem. I always struggle with the best way to show off the true colors in my skeins as well as the stitch detail in my projects. Elem elaborates within the show about the merits of using a light box and how to create your own, inexpensively.

She also included a link to some of Elem’s pics which demonstrate the magnificent results that can be gotten using this great tool. Elem just happens to also be a member of this along (everybody wave hi!), so a big thank you to him for posting this information for all of us to learn from. Go check out his podcast if you haven’t already done so too! :)

So there you have it! Another week and some more interesting stuff for you to check out. There really were so many great links this week. I hope those of you that haven’t won yet will continue to submit. Making my job hard is a good thing!

I should also note that next week’s contest winner may not get posted on Wednesday, but we will have the contest, so get those entries in!

I’d also like to remind you about the Scavenger Hunt deadline which is coming up next week. I’m getting some really great entries and many creative answers to the questions! Make sure you check out the comments on that post. As people have been asking questions, I’ve been answering them there.

Until next time - Sock On!!! :)

SOS Update: Week 6

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

A big pat on the back to everyone listed below who is clicking away in spite of the dog days of summer. :-) Sock on!
Beth a/k/a Bossygirl

From Worsted Knitt’s group:

Tina has finished her Elenora socks, and they are gorgeous! She also has a sock dilemma - to risk or not to risk a lacy pattern in variegated yarn.

Wendy has really put on the turbo-gear on knitting and has finished several socks in just a few days.

Vikkie did a posting on her River Rapid Socks - she has half-a-sock to go.

From Dee’s group:
Devorah has been very, very busy painting and enjoying NYC, but she had time to finish some Undulating Rib Socks in a very cooling blue. She also just finished up a matching sock/vest set, also in blue (July 30th posting). Those socks are her own pattern and are just adorable! Great job, Devorah! She not only has some cute socks, but the kiddos are cute too.

Deb has finished a pair of Juta’s stockings from the Nancy Bush book. While you are checking out the socks, don’t miss the sock blockers. The sheep cut-outs are adorable. The socks are beautiful too.

Victor has two pair of colorful socks on his needles. He has some of his own hand-dyed yarn going and needs our help deciding which should be the top and the bottom. Head on over and give him your opinion. I don’t have one, Victor. I think both sides look great!

From April’s group:
First off, I’d like to share a common sentiment amongst my bloggers with all of you. In reading blogs this morning I came across many, many blog posts about the tragedy of the bridge collapse in MN. Thoughts and prayers and good vibes are with everyone involved.

Now, for the knitting.

Abby is finding that her sock mojo is ever decreasing. Oh no! I feel the same way as of late. Many of us do, in fact. Don’t despair Abby. You’ll wake up one day with a strong desire to knit some socks. You’ll see.

Adelle is currently working on the mate to her SSS2 sock, and it’s looking gorgeous. Great burgundy color.

Jen has finally decided to scrap Mom’s socks and go ahead and use Catania, a 100% cotton, fingering weight yarn. Pretty color choice.

Amanda has completed a pair of Flame Wave socks, and is excited to show the world. Good job Amanda!

Our other Amanda is working on Charade socks for her mother, and also reminds us all that Summer of Socks is halfway over!

Amy managed to start and finish a Bellatrix sock last weekend. If you recall, last Friday she finished her Anastasia socks, which was her first FO since May!

Amy H. is interested in touching your monkey. I mean, sock-knitting. She’s working on Monkey socks along with Boudica socks, after taking a short break from knitting.

Amy P. completed her first sock for the design competition, and is working on her second sock. She also completed Wren and I think you should all take a look, even though it’s not a sock.

Anastacia completed a pair of broad ripples (converted to toe-ups) for her mother for Christmas.
Andrea finished her Daffodil socks and you need to check them out. They’re just fantastic! Unfortunately, she found them very boring to knit, and isn’t a huge fan of the yarn.

Angela Marie finished up her Sockapalooza 4 socks. The colorway is one of my favorites.

Angeluna thinks that SOS will get about 2 pairs of socks out of her. It seems she’d like to knit more, but don’t fret Angeluna. 2 pairs is better than 0 pairs, which is what I’ve got so far! J

And finally, Aquaknits shows off her deliciously sexy Uptown Boot Socks. I have fallen in love. She also shows off her completed cable knit socks.

From CaroleKnits group:

Beverly celebrated finishing her dissertation (GO, Beverly!) by also finishing a pair of Monkey Socks. Sounds like two great things to celebrate to me!

Carissa
got caught knitting socks while hanging out waiting for her new IKEA to open. She sure did get a lot of press coverage for those socks!

From Tina’s group:
Sheri Roy has finished her Sockapalooza socks and they look great - Belle Maman in Austermann Step!

And Shannan has finished her Yarrow Rib socks. She’s also posted some very pretty handspun _sock_ yarn (whew - I knew I could make that relevant to the Summer of Socks somehow!).

Go knitters!

From Barb’s group:
Arlene has finished her green Fleece Artist socks WTG!!
Barb has a pretty pair finished as well, WTG!!
Barb has her first pink Monkey done
Barb has a pair but they don’t match, a pic will be up soon
Beth has a pair done WTG!!

From Cecilie’s group:
Courtney is as smitten with the embossed leaves as the rest of us.

Cynthia made her son a pair of socks.. and has already started on another one.

Cindy double plays us with her new pair of socks (you go girl! ;) ) and tests out yarn with tiny socks.

From Jean’s group:
Week 6 and we are knittin’ up a storm in our group!

Flibbertygibbet (Gail) finished two pairs of self-striping socks, one pair for her dad’s birthday and another pair for her Christmas stash. I wonder how many of us are stashing our socks for Christmas?

Heather McCoy finished another pair of Thuja socks! These are pretty blue worsted weight socks on size 6 needles.

Holly is working on some Drops Chicken Wire socks and taking lots of knitting on a trip to China this week!

Becky is now calling the socks she is knitting the “Retro Rib socks of doom,” but she is past the heel turn on the second sock, so it won’t be long before she can start knitting some new socks. Hang in there, Becky!

Heather #1 is working on some Socks that Rock in an amazing color - Seastone. Beautiful blues and greens. On her blog, she has a link to a neat website with lots of sock knitting tips.

Janelle has two pairs of socks on the needles: the manly socks for her very tall husband and a new pair of Sockbug River Rapids socks. Check her site for a link to this pattern and some info on a new sock knitting group on Ravelry.

From Vera’s group:

Susan is expanding her sock knitting horizons.

Susanna went turbo and finished a pair of socks in a weekend.

Karen has cast on with some gorgeous yarn.

Gosh, Tanya’s Embossed Leaves socks are pretty, and she’s finished up some killer Cookie A. sock patterns. The Pomatomos is stunning in the shades of gray.

Tempe has a beautiful sock OTN. She’s designing it as she knits, and the Tofutsies yarn looks great.

Tibbers has an FO.

How does Tiennie knit so many, many, many socks? I don’t know, but they are all sweet. The Horcrux socks are on my “to-do ” list, and, now I know what to do with that skein of STR Hot Flash in heavyweight that I got last year.

Finally, I have a pair of socks for SOS, and it was truly a Breeze!

From Jess’ group:
Kathy says: Looking back on my week, I haven’t done as much actual knitting as just thinking about it! I completed the Child’s First (and Second) Sock in Shell Pattern and cast on for Marigold using my Yarn Pirate. The browns and blues of this sock remind me of Fall, but my heads still in summer!

Karin says: Finally got a picture of my SOS’07 #3’s into the group [Flickr] pool - and they didn’t break the camera! I loved the pattern and yarn base, but the colours? Eew-w-w… SOS’07 #4 is also posted as of this AM and I’m working away on #5 - no pics yet, I’ll save those for my blog update this weekend. A lot of the KAL’s I’m in are starting new projects for August - I’m hoping to get some “double-duty” pairs done this month.

KarenJoSeattle wrote: My sock knitting took a breather this week after I pruned the tip of my finger as well as the rose bush on Monday. Aside from being uncomfortable in general and at a gauge of 11 spi in particular, until Thursday evening the cut kept splitting open with any stress. I didn’t want to literally hand-dye my cream Regia Silk so stuck to other projects. Tonight I should get back on track and turn the heel.

Judy says: I actually have some progress to report (you have to read back for the past month to figure out why this is such a miracle). I may even have a whole pair of socks to show when this summer is over…

That’s all for this week, folks!

~JessaLu

From Melinda’s group:
Paula finished her first pair of
SOS socks using 2.75mm SHARP pointed Knit Picks circs, Panda Cotton
yarn in Strawberries and Limes, and the Carolina Last Queen of Naples
pattern. Way to go Paula!
Phoebe has one Solstice Slip Sock completed for her
sockapalooza pal in the Panda Wool. She used the magic loop technique
on size zero Addis. As for matching pair she have about 30 more rows
before she starts the toe…definitely will be done if not tomorrow, early over
the weekend. Yay Phoebe!
Obsidan Knitter. is still in
a bit of shock after the bridge over the Mississippi river collapsed but I am
happy to report that she’s safe and was not near or on the bridge at the
time of the collapse. As for her socks this week she’s still working on the
red sock and testing the pattern she wrote. If all goes well she’ll send it out
to friends to test it. Glad that you are okay Obsidan!
Orghlaithmanaged to frog
Two socks this week. So far she cannot find a yarn that works for a
Feather and Fan sock. Poor Orghlaith-if anyone has a yarn
suggestion???
Not That Kat’sJaywalkers are
almost done. She just needs to bind off and put in the heels, and then they
will be complete. Can’t wait for the afterthought heels tutorial Kat!
UPDATE: The tutorial is up! Go check it out!
Opal has finished one
sock of a pair. It’s in the Chevron pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks
and she’s using Opal Sock Yarn. They’re looking good Opal!
Pam finished 2
pairs of socks this week rounding out her total sock count so far to NINE
pairs. Pair #8 are the Cross-Stitch block pattern and pair #9 are the Baby
Fern pattern both from More Sensational knitted socks. Although they
don’t count towards SOS because they were made for her daughter, Pam
used the Crosshatch lace pattern, also from MSKS using left over posh
yarn in refresh colorway, to make a very cute pair of socks. Way to rock
this week Pam!

From Kathy’s group:
Now that I’ve straightened out my spam filter, lots of things are getting through! So here goes!

Yes book reading has gotten in the way of knitting, but other knitting (MS3) has gotten in the way of socks for some of us! Laura of Fiber Dreams did finish a pair of Monkey Socks last week using Peace Fleece even while knitting a mystery.

Lisa of Knitting By the Sea is working on a few socks right now but she’s in love with her Loksins in Dream in Color Smooshy (is that not a great name for yarn?) - I’ve seen this pattern around a lot this summer, another one on my list!

Leigh of Rock On Knit PrOn finished a pair in Paton’s Classic Wool using a short row heel. It’s great to learn or try something new with each pair of sock’s, isn’t it? A new technique, a new pattern, a new yarn, or a new needle! This sock is headed to the church as part of their Prayer Shawl program. I know they will be appreciated. She’s also working on some cabled baby booties and a Spiral Eyelet Sock. Busy!

Linda of Boogie Socks- who I’m so sorry I missed last week - has jumped on my suggestion to design a pair of car socks! She and her husband show a 1956 Chevy and Linda has started a pair of socks using Cascade Fixation to match the car! So cool! She’s also chugging along on her Summer Vacation socks, starting sock #2 this week.

Leigh aka The Knitting Yogini has finished her Dahlia Socks from Sundara’s Petal Collection. She’s been busy with her son, her pregnancy and many, many pickles, but finally managed to finish a pair! Yay!

Another knitter I missed last week was Lisa of Peacecat This ‘n’ That, she’s finished one footie sock with some leftover Opal Cotton yarn that she used to make her Horcrux socks. I like how she cast right on with her leftover yarn, mine sits and waits in a box for that project made from leftovers….

Laura at Affiknitty has finished her Sockapalooza socks this week. She made the Swirl Socks using Cider Moon Glacier. Someone will be happy getting these in the mail!

Limedragon has finished her Mosaic Socks for her pal. The pattern is Caesar’s Check from SKS’s. I adore these!

Kristy of Simple Elegance is also working on Sockapalooza socks this summer. She’s knitting the Whisper Rib and Shepherd’s Lace socks using Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock - how appropriate! She’s also cast on a pair of beautiful socks using her own handspun from Teyani’s fiber.

Lara of Trixie’s Stix has finished a pair of Marigolds using Hill Country’s Sweetfeet. I’m working on this very same pattern this week, it is lovely! Easy to memorize and quick to knit!

From Megan’s group:
This week Mobishobel
shows us great progress on a lovely pair of Monkey socks, and has
plans to cast on some Fawkes socks to commemorate the end of the Harry
Potter series. Monica
took a trip to Las Vegas and won some knitting time. She finished a
pair of Gentleman’s Socks with Lozenge Pattern from Nancy Bush’s
Knitting Vintage Socks. Lovely work, ladies!

From Sarah’s group:

Sally has finished her first Rum Runner sock and is speeding (by my definition!) through the second. Lookin’ good!

Sarah’s socks are moving along. Sounds like she’s gearing up to start knitting a Rogue, though — here’s hoping it doesn’t make her abandon her socks forever! ;-)

Sammie has two new socks this week. I especially love the purple-and-green-and-yellow one — one of my favorite color combinations. AND she has a new kitten! Hopefully the new kitten isn’t a yarn-chaser!

Ruth finished a pair of socks — love the colors! — and started right in on the next pair. Yay!

Rycrafty finished a beautiful pair of Vinnland socks.

I finished my Monkey socks, FINALLY, and I’d be done with my first toe-up, short row heel sock — if I hadn’t had a needle disaster! TWO of my DPNs broke over the course of the project. I’m about halfway up the leg of the first sock of the pair, and I’m hoping Brittany replaces my needles soon so I can finish!

From Manda’s group:
Lucinda has a MILLION and a half socks on the needles, and she’s making progress on all of them. THis week, though, she graces my update with TWO finished pairs of socks. WTG! :)

Lynette finished a lovely pair of WOW!! socks for her neighbor and ALSO a pair of footies for someone’s grandmother! how sweet :)

LynnK is making some progress… she’s working on her Fleece Artist socks AND she’s started another sock for a friend!

Madelyn finished her Tidal Wave socks this week! Good job!

Maire finished her Hedera socks, but has yet to post pictures.

Malia finished some Basket Weave socks.

Malin is making some steady progress. She finished one Wendelin sock and has started the second, as well as starting two other socks-in-progress.

Manda finished her Sockapalooza socks this week.

Margaret posted some progress: some finished sock-pal socks, and some Charades (LOVE! That pattern!) in progress.

Margene has 3 first socks, but no second socks! :( Cheer her on to finishing some of those pairs!

Happy (belated) Birthday, Meghann!! :) She finished Sockapalooza Sock #1, turned the heel on #2, and hopes to make some progress on it while seeing the Yarn Harlot!

Melissa gives us photos of THREE finished pairs of socks.

From Jen’s group:
FOs galore in my group this week. Might be something to do with that looming Sockapalooza deadline. ;)

First up, JessaLu knit a GORGEOUS pair of Bellatrix socks. My words cannot do them justice. You just have to go see for yourself.

Traveling Jeanie finished her third pair of SOS socks, another set of Monkeys. She’s also down in Florida, btw. You’ll recall that only a couple of weeks ago she was traveling around the Canadian Rockies. Awesome.

Jaya emerged from a bit of blog silence to reveal a jaw-dropping pair of Chalet Socks from “Folk Socks.” They are knit in red. Real red. Like bad girl lipstick red. I love these. I wish I was Jaya’s Sockapalooza pal. Now she has beautiful Sundara yarn on the needles. *Swoon*

Jess of the bugs has been clearing stash. Out with the vintage acrylic! In with the nearly completed pair of socks in a pattern of her own design.

Artist Jess finished her yummy Peaches and Cream socks in Panda Cotton just in time for a MIL visit. And now she’s jerry-rigging her Vesper Sock to get the striping right. After snip-snipping the yarn, she’s anxious about running out. The heel looks so totally worth it the anxiety, though.

Mathgirl received her Ravelry invite and still managed to finish her Ominous Skies socks for her Sockapalooza pal. Good girl!

Jeri of Soap, Quilt, Knit finished her Loksins. If you haven’t noticed this beautiful pattern yet, run over to Jeri’s site and have a look. While you’re there, grab a moment to learn to knit a new top-down toe. Jeri says it reminds her of a short-row heel but without holes.

Jen of Tua Bella had a bit of a setback earlier in the week - she found the socks she was knitting for her Sockapalooza pal already on her pal’s Ravelry project page! She did what she had to do and knit up a whole new pair, PLUS an angel pair (for those whose pal flakes) by the end of the week. She even added the cutest matching keychain socks.

Jennifer of Knitting in Oblivion has renamed SOS to Summer of One Sock. Girl is still knitting the same single sock for her sister. Knit. Rip. Knit. Rip. I have to say, I applaud her tenacity to keep going. Hang in there, Jennifer!

Flash Your Sock Drawer! Super Sock Knitter, Jeannie, finished three more pair this week bringing her SOS 2007 total to 15. I’m particularly fond of her latest pair, Scrolls from More SKS, knit in Gypsy Girl Creations yarn. She also gave us a peek at her sock drawer. Check out all those handmade socks!

Check out Joanna’s new pair of Tiger Eyes from “Socks, Socks, Socks” knit with Lana Grosa Meilenweit cotton. Cotton lovers take note: Joanna says this yarn isn’t splitty.

Jenny Rae knocked out a pair of Serpentine Socks, July’s Sockamania pattern. Congratulations, Jenny Rae, for being one of this month’s Sockamania winners!

This week at CafŽ Eclectic, jennsquared turned the heels of her toe-up Falling Leaves socks. She also bit the bullet and signed up for Ravelry. Another one down. Another one down. ;)

Happy Birthday to Jessica at Alabama Fiber Dreams! She’s got iPhones, hunky eye candy, new kitchen appliances, and mysterious sock that she’s using to taunt someone named Sharon. Jessica, if Sharon doesn’t want them, I’ll take ‘em.

The Esoteric Knitter has just about completed another pair this week - this time she’s got smooshy Cherry Tree Hill on the needles for her Knitty Swap pal. Jenny has seriously lucky pals!

Our fearless leader, Jessica, finished her Clessidras, a Knitty pattern she converted to work toe-up. Her Clessidras also got a little jiggy with Ben Franklin in Philly. Uhm Jessica, where is Ben’s thumb?

Jeanne flashed her great sock yarn haul that she picked up in Maine. Who knew they were hoarding such good yarn up there? She’s got her second sock on the needles, which she knits on the train as she contemplates whether knitting slowly will get more milage out of yarn.

Jo has been busy this week dying up her own sock yarn in honor of Dumbledore’s faithful phoenix. She’s going to use her knew Phoenix Feathers colorway to knit Gigi Silva’s Fawkes socks. Meanwhile she’s *this* close to finishing her Pomatomus socks.

And last, but not least, Jen got to meet the Yarn Harlot, who posed with her sock. Dang, how can I possibly win the Best Photo contest now?

From Jody’s group:
Roberta finished her sockaplooza pal’s socksCoupling in Regia Bamboo.

Kate has finished her mom’s socks and she loved them!

Deb has gotten started on her first pair — using a pink shade of tofutsies.

Surprise! It’s a new contest!

Surprise contest alert!!

That’s right! It’s August (how did that happen?!) and time for a surprise contest. I told you I had some extra tricks up my sleeve. ;)

Here’s the deal. We’re about to have a little scavenger hunt. You’ll answer 10 questions and get your name in a drawing to win this fabulous prize:

Turquoise and Limes

Self Striping Red, Turquiose, & Golden Yellow 009

That would be 2 different 4 oz. skeins of hand-dyed 100% superwash wool yarn from Cynthia’s Skeins. Cynthia was generous enough to donate this prize especially for this contest in addition to the stitch markers she had already donated. Thank you Cynthia!

Simple enough. Yes? Anyone registered in the along can play. Here are the rules (you knew there had to be rules, right?! ;)):

Copy and paste the text below into an e-mail you’ll send to me at the contest e-mail address (we all know how to find that now, right?!) with the subject Scavenger Hunt. Under each number, paste in the link to the website that you would like to supply as your answer which should NOT be from your own blog. Fill out the “Name” and “blog url” portions and you’re ready to hit send! Get it to me by 10pm on August 15th and you’re in the running for the loot. Winner will be chosen at random and announced around August 17th.

Got it? Good! Below the dashed line is your contest entry form. Good luck everyone!
