What is The Summer of Socks?

The Summer of Socks is a three month knit/crochet along designed to help us celebrate the warm weather while preparing for the day when we’ll want all those cozy socks to keep our feet and those of our loved ones warm again. Socks make a great project for taking on vacation and for keeping us at our hobbies and learning new things in those warm months when you just don’t want a sweater or an afghan on your lap (but I didn’t have to tell you that right?!).

When is it?

The along starts on June 21st (the summer solstice) and end on September 21st (the autumn equinox). During the course of the three month along, you can knit or crochet as many or as few socks as you like. No pattern requirements, no yarn requirements, do as much or as little as you want! The ways you participate are completely up to you! But there are some fun ways that you can make the most of your three months.

Who can play?

Anyone can play who loves making socks, whether you knit them or crochet them! The only other rule is that you *must* have a blog that you update regularly so we can share in what you’re making.

The contests

Yes there are contests involved if you want to exercise your competitive spirit while you crank out your new socks. Here’s a few of them:

Most socks contest - This year this contest will be divided into a crocheters division and a knitters division. For each pair of adult sized socks you knit or crochet, you will recieve 1 point. Whoever has the most points on September 21st in each division will win a fabulous prize! In order for your socks to count this year, you must post a picture to the Summer of Socks 2007 Flickr group and e-mail me to let me know that your picture has been posted (you’ll probably want to put them on your own blog too. Just sayin’ ;)).

Socks on vacation contest - Take your socks on vacation! No matter where you are going to go to relax this year- the back yard, the local pool, the mountains, the ocean or somewhere else- take a picture, include your sock and e-mail it to me to enter the contest! Our participants will vote to determine the best picture and the winner will also go away with a fabulous sock-y prize!

Weekly link contest - New this year! We all know there is a lot of cool stuff out on the ‘net, but we don’t possibly have enough time to see it all. Did you find something really neat that is sock related that you want to tell the world about? Send me your links and each week I’ll pick a lucky winner who’ll get something fun in the mail!

And finally…

Design contest - New this year! We found out last year that there are some very talented and creative people who like to make socks. I think we should encourage these people to share their talents with us all, so we’ll have a contest for sock design this year. Submit your new and original pattern to this contest and a selected panel of judges will choose the best design from those submitted. The designer will win a fabulous prize and we will all benefit by being the first to get our hot little hands on a new pattern made just for us! (Just a couple of rules: Your pattern should be made with a yarn that can be purchased from one of our official sponsors and should be for adult sized feet.)

Please note! Each of these contests must have at least 15 people signed up in order for the contest to run.

There will also be secret contests throughout the three months. I can’t give it all away or it wouldn’t be any fun, now can I?
