Vacation 3

Description: The socks and their friends went wine tasting in Napa. The favorite winery by far was Jocelyn Lonen. Incredible wine, beautiful setting, great friends, and a fabulously silly time posing with the socks. Pictured are Clementine (Joslyn’s Fiber Farm), Monkey (Fleece Artist), Perambulate (Zen String), and Gull Wings (Lornas Laces).

Vacation 4

Description: I took this photo while having a short holiday at my Mother’s in summery Finland. The days were long and hot, and the evenings warm and nice and very suitable for knitting. So I cast on the Sauna-sukka (sauna-sock) with a leafy motive to celebrate summer and the fantastic Finnish sauna (which I did enjoy every evening, I must say). The picture is taken on the well in my Mother’s garden, and is posing with some homegrown flowers and onions.

Vacation 5

Description: This photo was taken at the Grotto di Catulle, ruins of an ancient Roman villa, at Sirmione, Lake Garda, Italy. It was a searingly hot day: the sky was very blue, the ruins stark against the skyscape, and various windows and arches provided a frame for the photos of my socks. The Grotto is set amongst olive trees and is at the very tip of the Sirmione peninsula. From here you get an amazing view of the lake itself, as well as the rolling hills and Cypress trees that are such a part of the Italian landscape.

The Grotto was said to have belonged to the poet Catullus, but historians now believe it was built one hundred years after his death. I studied Catullus at school, and it felt amazing to walk amongst the ruins of a building that had been once so beautiful and imposing, and think of the people who would have lived there and their daily lives.

Description: Sock with Siegfried and Roy: Ok not actually with them, but with me and a cardboard cut-out of the fabulous duo and one of their stars (also cardboard). Taken outside Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden in Las Vegas, NV! The Garden itself is quite nice and they have alpacas!! The sock in progress is the Inside Out pattern from the Rockin’ Sock Club knit with Socks that Rock mediumweight in Midsummers Night.

Vacation 8

Description: The photo was taken in a beer garden in Freiburg, Germany. The socks are the monkey sock pattern in Wollmeise’s superwash sock yarn in Campari Orange. I thought the socks matched the table and organic beer (which was amazing!!) perfectly, so I just had to take a picture. Prost!

Vacation 9

Description: This photo was taken on our annual trip up to Georgia during July 4th week. It was taken in Vogel State Park at the waterfalls not too far from Atlanta. It is a photo of the Brigit sock that I was making for my sockapalooza pal in Panda Wool, Aquamarine. That sock saw many waterfalls but this was the nicest photo to submit as per the family’s two cents+ opinion.

Vacation 11

Description: My sock went to see the Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile in concert in Freeport, Maine! The pattern is simple 3×3 rib, short row toes, my first time trying Magic Loop. The yarn is cotton by Greenwood Fiberworks and the needle is 40′ size 1 Addis. Knitting before the concert sparked some awesome conversation with other concert go-ers… it was great to share my love of knitting and music with others!

Vacation 12

Description: This picture was taken at The Museum of Civilizations in Gatineau, Quebec. I was standing on a outdoor lookout across the Ottawa River from the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, Ontario. To the left of Parliament you can see the Chateau Laurier Hotel, and at the bottom of the pic you see the toe of my Campanula Sock. The day was gorgeous, if a little windy, and the view was spectacular!

Vacation 13

Description: This photo was taken in Newport, RI, in the harbor — there’s a statue there of 2 feet sticking out of a crested wave! How perfect, I thought. The sock wasn’t quite done, and of course the feet aren’t quite to scale, so the heel didn’t fit. But some people walking by got a chuckle out of it, saying “look, someone put a sock on that statue” (not realizing I’d done it).

These socks are the Slouch Socks from Socks! Socks! Socks! in nature’s palette, which I really, really love. It’s a nice, soft wool. I’ve discovered that I really like variegated, but not self striping.

Vacation 14

Description: This is my Summer of Socks 2007 - Vacation Socks. Started at Grayland Beach, Washington (Pacific coast) while we were camping in our RV. A Kite Festival was going on while we were there. The colors in this sock remind me of all the bright and summery kite colors. The pattern is from Sensational Knitted Socks Book - Openwork Rib on page 37. The yarn is Seacoast Handpainted Panda - Penstemon (wool/bamboo blend).

Vacation 16

Description: I call it “Birth of an Urban Sock.” My husband, daughter, and I went to Chicago for our vacation. Realizing that I’ve forgotten my digital camera in Tennessee, I stop by a Walgreens (one of many downtown) and buy a tiny little $10 digital camera. We stop in a little park at the bottom of the Sears Tower for lunch and I cast on for the socks I’m designing for the SOS design contest. As we walk around town, I flip out the PDA and design and knit as I go. I’m a small town girl and more used to forests than urban jungles. No matter how many times we visit Chi-town, I still feel very small.

Vacation 18

Description: These Monkeys were almost finished when I took this photo on the beach.

We rented a little cottage on the lake in Kelowna, BC, right across the street from a wee pocket beach, just the right size for my 2 and 4 year olds to scream in and out of the water, build a sandcastle and giant moat, haul water around and generally have a great time. While I got to knit away on my socks!

(And yes, I also made the beach bag that the socks are resting on.)

Vacation 19

Description: I wanted to submit this picture because it was taken by a non-knit blogger. We knit bloggers often endure strange looks as we take
pictures of our socks in various locations, but I have a Muggle sister who is so taken with the hiking socks I make for her, she willingly takes wonderful pictures of them in action. This year, she went on a trip to Glacier Lake in Montana and took this fantastic shot of her TOFUtsies sock with the lake. She actually guest-blogged a whole entry about it, extolling her love of handknit socks.

The best thing about it is that just wearing her handknit socks has converted her. She wants to learn to knit!

Vacation 20

Description: My sock and I flew to Las Vegas, NV from San Francisco, CA. I knit pretty much continuously on the flight. I am using the basic sock recipe from the Yarn Harlot’s “Knitting Rules”. I finished this sock while sitting in my hotel room and cast on it’s mate before heading back to San Francisco.

Vacation 21

Description: I was at the Jiingijamboree in Sweden with my Dutch scoutgroup. I didn’t have a lot of time to knit between going to the activities, cooking for 40 people and trying to have a good time, but there were a couple of moments like the one shown in the picture. It was taken during the opening ceremony where I was knitting amidst 20.000 scouts. The show was in Swedish, me and my scouts didn’t understand a word so I was happy to have my knitting needles with me to make some progress on my sock. I was distracted for a moment though and made a little mistake in the middle of a pattern repeat. It will remind me indefinitely to a nice scoutcamp in Sweden. The yarn is Colinette Jitterbug in Florentine and the pattern is from this internet site: http://www.persistentillusion.com/blogblog/freebies/snake-river-socks-2.

Vacation 22

Description: I am knitting a pair of plain stockinette socks toe up. I was in Gettysburg and I asked an historical Civil War reenactor whom I saw knitting to hold my sock. I liked the span of history angle, I also really liked the fact that the hand dyed wool silk blend from Cherry Tree Hill would not have been knit up for socks, or quite possibly anything else, in the 1800’s, although, from what I could see the article being knit up by the reenactor, I can’t believe I didn’t ask her name, definitely looked like something a woman knitting in the 1800’s would be knitting.

Vacation 24

Description: Beets are the new black! This photo was taken in my own backyard just before my husband took away these lovely beets to make a tasty salad. They’re from our CSA farmer and ooooh so tasty. The sock pattern is Sweetpea in Schaffer Anne ‘apparently the most radioactive colorway ever’. I love the beets and the sock!

Vacation 25

Description: Picture taken at: Vermillion Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada — The Canadia Rockies

Pattern: Cookie A’s Monkey socks on size 2 circulars (top down).
Yarn: The Woolen Rabbit’s 50% Merino/30% Bamboo/10% Nylon Sock yarn in the Red Maple colorway. This was a beautiful, soft yarn to work with and I loved the way the colors moved throughout the socks. I did not check my gauge so I think these socks are larger than the gauge in the pattern, but that is good because I like slouchy socks.
